About Brasov
Being located in the centre of the country, Brasov is one of the oldest and more beautiful cities of Romania, and its surroundings represent one of the most attractive touristic areas of the country.
Former medieval fortress, the city preserves a lot from the unique charm of those times that may be lived once more by going for a walk in the area referred to as The Old Brasov. At the same time, various vestiges have become attraction items in the recent years subsequent to restorations: the walls of the old fortress are visible from the alley under Tampa, the towers of observation and bastions, Dupa Ziduri (Behind the Walls) – part of the medieval fortified belt of Brasov. The Old Centre is renowned by its religious buildings, among which the Black Church, over 500 years old, is ranked as the biggest gothic church from Transylvania. Other interesting historic monuments are The Old Town-Hall, the Little Fortress, Reduta Cultural Centre, but also the Council Square. Also in the old centre of Brasov you may visit Rope Street, dating from the begging of the XIIIth century – which is the narrowest street in Eastern Europe, its walls may be touched with both hands simultaneously.
In Brasov you also find the museum of the First Romanian School from Transylvania (built in 1495), which hosts various exhibitions related to the history of printing, as well as other museums which are worth being visited, such as the museum of History, of Art and the Museum of Ethnography.
The city is attractive also by its rich cultural life: the theatres from Brasov, the Philharmonic, the Opera and the cultural centres are extremely active during the entire year, and the local authorities organize traditional festivals, such as The Days of Brasov City and the celebration of the Young Men of Brasov (Sarbatoarea Junilor Brasovului), which is by far the most spectacular festivity due to its novelty.
For those interested in nature walks, the surroundings are generous: Poiana Brașov (with the ski slopes and hiking trails), Peasant Fortress at Rasnov, Bran Castle and other fortified churches from the area, such as: the Church-Fortress Harman, the Church of Prejmer, the Church from Sanpetru, Fortress of Codlea.
