Father of 5 Children Benefits from Free of Charge Heart Surgery
The man is 55 years old and has been diagnosed with a 99% percent injury on the main heart artery. He lives in a village, near Baraolt, county of Covasna. He is retired and father of 5 children who he supports from his pension, his only income. His wife has died 2 years ago.
The operation meant to save the life of was an aortocoronary bypass, however, he couldn’t have afforded it, the cost of the intervention being of Euros 5.000. Because the patient suffered from great pains which confined him to bed and without the surgical operation he could have suffered, at any time, an acute myocardial infarction which would have ended his life, the physicians from ICCO clinics have decided to operate him free of charge.
The intervention took place on the 22nd of July and lasted an hour and a half. It was conducted by a complex team consisting of four cardiovascular surgeons, an anaesthesiologist and three operating block nurses, all of them relocated to Brasov from the medical centre Cluj-Napoca. The surgery was carried out on open heart while beating – without the patient’s heart being stopped. Unlike the classical method, during which the patient’s heart is stopped, and his vital functions are supported by an extracorporeal circulation device, the cardiovascular surgeons from ICCO Clinics have operated on active heart.
After the surgery, Gergely Arpad remained in the hospital for 10 days, for post-operative surveillance and recovery. A month after he underwent heart surgery he could already resume a normal lifestyle.
