ABOUT BRASOV CITY

Being located in the centre of the country, Brasov is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Romania. Moreover, its surroundings represent one of the most attractive tourist areas in the country.

Once a medieval city, Brasov still maintains most of the charm of those times, which can be experienced by strolling across the old area of the city. Moreover, in the past few years, numerous vestiges have become attractive tourist sites due to the restoration works. Among these sites, we can list: the old fortress walls that can be admired from the promenade at the foot of Tampa, the watch towers and the bastions, Dupa Ziduri (Behind the Walls) – a segment of the medieval fortified bypass of Brasov City.

The Old Centre is also known for its cultural vestiges, such as the Black Church, which is 500 years old and is considered the largest Gothic church in Transylvania. Other interesting historic sites are the Old City Hall, the Citadel, Reduta Cultural Centre and the Council Square. In the Old Centre you can also visit Strada Sforii (Rope Street) that dates back to the beginning of the 13th century and is the narrowest street in Eastern Europe. The walls of the houses on the two sides of the street can be reached with both hands, at the same time.

In Brasov City you will also find the museum of the First Romanian School in Transylvania (built in 1495) that hosts various exhibits from the history of printing and education. There are other interesting museums worth visiting as well: the History Museum, the Museum of Arts and the Museum of Ethnography.

The city also attracts people with its rich cultural life: the city theatres, the Philharmonic Orchestra, the Opera House and the cultural centres that are extremely active throughout the year. Moreover, the local authorities organise various traditional festivities and celebrations such as Brasov’s Days and the Parade of the Juni (Youth), which is one of the most spectacular celebrations.

For those who enjoy strolling in the nature, the surroundings are very generous: Poiana Brasov (with ski slopes and mountain trails), Rasnov Citadel, Bran Castle and other fortified churches in the area, such as the Church-Fortress in Harman, the Church in Prejmer, the Church in Sanpetru, the Citadel in Codlea.
