Autohemotherapy is a blood transfusion performed with the patient’s own blood. The blood lost during a surgical intervention is recovered, filtered and processed and then transfused back to the patient. Thus, the donor and the receiver are one and the same. However, the advantages for the patient are major:

• It eliminates the side effects that might occur with normal transfusion: viral infections (HIV, type B and C hepatitis etc.), bacterial infections, acute respiratory distress syndrome, allergic and immunologic reactions, the transfer various of diseases (malaria, brucellosis, Chagas disease, syphilis) etc.;
• The blood used is fresh and of higher quality than the conserved one;
• Postoperative evolution is better.
